ABSTRACT

Renee Hirschon is descr ibing getting somewhere to live in a particular neighbourhood between Athens and Piraeus, where many of the refugees from the 1922 exchange of populations with Turkey settled and their families still live. Access to her informants was dependent on living in the neighbourhoodbecause Hirschon is an anthropologist who wanted to do an ethnography of the community-and as she says, finding a room crystallized the rules she would have to live by.
