ABSTRACT

These are the opening words of Dan Mannix’s book about his time with an American carnival. It may appear strange to begin the final chapter of a book with the opening words of another one, but there are two themes embedded in it which make the choice less strange. The first theme of the chapter is indeed endings: how to finish a piece of academic work and conclude scholarly writing. The second theme reflects the title of the chapter which is called ‘Always a little further’ because that possibility should both inform your thoughts as you conclude your study, and be made explicit in the conclusions of any thesis or book you produce from it. So in the first section, the possible ways to end are considered, and in the second, how to whet your readers’ appetites for your next golden journey.
