ABSTRACT
Over the course of the nineteenth century, Londoners’ consumption of leisure increased. Although still long, working hours gradually shortened; legally enforceable ‘bank’ holidays were introduced; living standards rose; and the very conception of leisure changed from a rest from work to an activity that could be pursued for its own sake.
