ABSTRACT

As explained in the preface to this book, its overall purpose is not to provide detailed training in the finer points of research methods, either quantitative or qualitative. There are a great many books available to which you can refer if you are interested in undertaking a quantitative project for your dissertation that will ultimately rely upon your having developed a thorough working understanding of content analysis or of linear regression techniques. For instance Pennings et al. (1999) deal with both. It is decidedly not the purpose of this book to even attempt to cover the wide range of quantitative techniques that are available to the social scientist and no apology is made for that.
