ABSTRACT
It is widely acknowledged that “the conduct of democratic (or undemocratic) politics nationally and internationally, depends more and more” on media (McQuail 1994: 1). What is much more contested is exactly how media and political transformation are related, how one phenomenon shapes the other, and what else needs to be taken into account to answer questions about the role of media in the process of democratization.
