ABSTRACT

Most of us are familiar with the argument that sport is good for us; indeed such a belief underlies not only some of our personal decision making but also public policy. We know that that there are disputes about the value systems instilled by sport, that we may suffer injury or abuse and that one individual or group may unnecessarily be set at odds with another, but in general the balance is seen to be substantially in favour of sport. Beyond that there is also a related belief that benefits accrue at a level beyond the individual in ways that support community development and regeneration.
