ABSTRACT
There is a certain caricature of the type of British philosopher who
came to be pre-eminent in the subject during the last century. Their
style of philosophising is said to be ‘analytic’. There are many for whom
this epithet implies no value judgement, but for critics, it captures all
that is dry and stale in the subject. The analytic philosopher models
their thinking on mathematics and science. Unable to see in shades of
