ABSTRACT

As I sit, poised to write this chapter about motivation in writing, I begin to think of the hundreds of times in my career that I have asked children to sit down and write. Did they view the blank, glaringly white sheet of paper with trepidation, or with eagerness and exhilaration? Were they excited by the prospect of their thoughts, their inner imaginings, their life experiences being caught and crystallised into words on a page, that others would share, with delight, with mild acceptance or with criticism?
