ABSTRACT

In the spring of 1796 Austria was the only major continental power waging land war with France; Britain was fighting at sea. On the Rhine, Jourdan, with the Armée de Sambre-et-Meuse (78,000), and Moreau, with the Rhin-et-Moselle (80,000), were preparing to strike at the Austrians in Germany.
