ABSTRACT

Bonaparte's campaign in Egypt was a disaster. It was a waste of lives, money and material. It made no difference in the international balance of power, or in the position of the French navy in the Mediterranean. There was little glory in besting enemies with a medieval concept of warfare and weapons to match. It was seen in retrospect that the intellectuals he took along had established the science of Egyptology - that was all. Yet fate and Bonaparte's talent in propaganda and (a surprise) politics miraculously turned it to his favor.
