Change and stability in the Finnish party system

Round years refresh old news. The year 1997 felt noteworthy because thirty years had passed since Party Systems and Voter Alignments was printed in 1967. For the Finns 1997 meant also the 80th year of independence from Russia, and March 1997 marked the 90th anniversary of Finland’s (and the world’s) first parliamentary election with universal suffrage and eligibility.
