ABSTRACT
The literature on both the history of the Middle Eastern petroleum industry and its place in the world economy is voluminous. 1 Hence, this chapter will concentrate mainly on two aspects: the peculiar characteristics of the industry and its impact on the economy of the region. But first a few words are necessary on the framework in which the industry developed.
