ABSTRACT

South Korea has a population of 43.5 million; life expectancy at birth in 1996 was 70 for men and 77 for women; the infant mortality rate is 8 per thousand live births. The respective figures for North Korea are 23.9 million, 67 and 74, and 26 per thousand live births (IHT, 5 March 1997, p. 6).
