ABSTRACT

The presentation of the data on foreign investment in this chapter begins with world totals, which is followed by a series of presentations on the aggregated data for the major investing countries. Although our basic interest is the Third World, a prior review of the evolution of investment from the individual source countries permits an overview of major trends while suggesting explanatory factors. Greater attention will be placed on the first half of the century, for which data from the Third World are less available, with the additional benefit that this focus allows us to search for common experiences among the colonies. This sets the stage for the discussion in the later chapters of the data for individual host countries.
