ABSTRACT

Open and distance learning makes different demands on students, and changes the way they learn, the theme of the previous two chapters. But it also makes new demands on staff. This chapter analyses the different demands it makes on staff, illustrating the argument mainly by reference to higher education. Santosh Panda looks at the way in which open and distance learning is changing the jobs of educational and administrative staff, examines the categories of staff that are needed in single-mode and dual-mode institutions, and looks at the variety of jobs they need to perform. This in turn leads to the need for an institutional emphasis on programmes of staff development.
