ABSTRACT

The account given in the last two chapters of the merger and its aftermath is essentially about how the particular organization in which I was working came to be what it was, and in an important sense how I and others came to be what we were. In other words, the stories had to do with the evolution of a particular organization’s identity and, therefore, its difference from other organizations. But it was not just some abstract entity that was evolving. It was human persons, the people who constituted the organization, who evolved collectively and individually. Those stories were about the pattern of a particular organization’s movement into the future, its strategic direction, and the causes of that pattern of movement. At the same time those stories were about the pattern of movement into the future of human persons, including me.
