ABSTRACT

To multiply by 10, add a nought. An important element of mathematics is the development of the ability to spot patterns and to make generalizations. Pupils frequently create their own explanations and rules to account for the patterns which they find but some of these, like the ‘rule’ quoted above, are inadequate or incorrect. Pupils’ errors are often due to misconceptions rather than careless mistakes. Many of these misconceptions are widespread and thus an awareness of them can help you to plan more effective teaching and learning.
