ABSTRACT
During the time when it may be apt to think of it as a world which we have lost, England was a pre-industrial society. In this it resembled the societies which we describe in our day as belonging to the Third World. But it does not follow from this that the incidence of births, marriages and deaths was the same with our country in the past as it is now with them, any more than the age of marriage has been the same.
