ABSTRACT
The idea of ‘tacit knowledge’ has proved fruitful in the sociology of scientific knowledge even while remaining ill-defined and elusive. I will describe and classify what has been done. I will set out some ways in which the idea has been used by practitioners of practice and then offer some comments on the different approaches.1
