ABSTRACT

Support for mental processing and mental engagement is often insufficient by itself: students may still fail to perform as expected. This chapter points to the total mental environment that shapes learning behaviours. Interaction between the many components of the mental environment gives rise to particular approaches to learning. Some associated learning behaviours are described. This sets the scene for subsequent chapters.
