ABSTRACT
This chapter begins to illustrate the application of the content of the preceding chapters to support for understanding. Teaching orientations and a press for understanding are described and various ways of fostering understanding are illustrated. Throughout, the need for an active, mental engagement with what is to be understood is emphasized. It is suggested that many teachers may not need to change their strategies but may need to use them more strategically.
