ABSTRACT
Castle was one of the most energetic and widely known politicians of her day. Indeed, her two volumes of The Castle Diaries (1980 and 1984) provide illuminating insights into her work within the Wilson governments. She also achieved significant reforms in the fields of social service and welfare provision, which more than washed away the pallor of defeat over In Place of Strife, the document for which she is often best remembered.
