ABSTRACT
In this conclusion, we draw together the issues identified in the preceding chapters by addressing four key questions that underpin much of the book's analysis of relations between immigration and welfare states. Why have national welfare states supported immigrants even though they have politically declared themselves to be non-immigration countries? Does immigration erode the national welfare state? Are new immigrants being excluded because they are perceived as undeserving of welfare state benefits? Does free movement within the European Union (EU) create new migration that undermines national welfare states?
