ABSTRACT

Macedonia is the newest country in this study: it ceded from Yugoslavia in 1991. The greater region of Macedonia, encompassing parts of northern Greece and Bulgaria and fragments of Albania and Kosovo, also has claims to great antiquity. There are fierce disputes over the country’s right to the name Macedonia, and those international organisations and states that do not recognise the title of the Republic of Macedonia refer to it as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM); I use Macedonia here, because this is the name used by my informants.
