ABSTRACT

In recent years there has been increasing interest in the effects of maternal eating disorders on children’s adjustment and development. Research studies have suggested that these children are at increased risk of abnormal growth and psychiatric disorders, and frequently experience difficult family relationships. The implications for clinical practice and intervention are only starting to be investigated. The aim of this chapter is to provide a summary of some key research issues and findings regarding the effects of maternal eating disorders on children. The clinical relevance will be discussed by considering the possibility of screening for problems in the children.
