ABSTRACT

Parenting is a complicated role involving a series of responsibilities and tasks performed within an on-going relationship. Parents must meet both the physical and psychological needs of their children and must protect them from physical harm, excessive distress and inappropriate social demands or exploitation (Hill, 1986). Parenting is not a quality that someone does or does not have but is a relationship which responds to fluctuations in other relationships (Reder and Lucey, 1995).
