ABSTRACT

Monarchy, the rule of a single individual, was not simple. No effective system of government is ever simple. This chapter examines more of its ramifications: the panoply, image and attributes of kingship; further limitations, legitimacy and the succession; and the concept of the king’s two bodies. The practical applications are deferred.
