ABSTRACT

It can be easily identified that these processes of innovation relate heavily to collaboration among institutions or enterprises at different locations. As a consequence, space and geographical proximity in such globalised processes of science-based innovation are perceived differently from in previous processes of socio-economic development. Patterns of globalisation clearly refer to competencies that can contribute to the forefront of research or the leading edge in technology development. Only a small number of locations are prepared to participate in these processes as far as science-based innovation is concerned.
