ABSTRACT
This chapter will:
examine the ways human–animal relations have changed historically, using the example of modernization in Europe
compare and contrast different theorizations of contemporary human– animal relations
critically examine the debates and social movements within the politics of animal rights
discuss three different examples of arenas where modern Western society interacts with animals: the production and consumption of animals as food, ‘pet’ keeping, and the use of animals as a means of human entertainment
