ABSTRACT

Mao’s personal physician, Li Zhisui, once remarked that the favourite hobby of men in rural China was sexual intercourse. It was a tradition to which Mao Zedong showed great loyalty and commitment. He came to adore women’s company. But it had not been ever thus; as a young man, Mao apparently had no time for women. Until his late teens he eschewed sexual or emotional entanglements.
