ABSTRACT

The Anglo-Boer War ended in 1902 with the Treaty of Vereeniging, one of the most generous post-war agreements in modern history. The victorious British helped their defeated enemies to restore and restock their farms. They granted most Boers an amnesty, they quickly offered them a constitution, they effectively allowed the Boers a veto over granting political rights to Africans and, in time, they encouraged some of the Boers to become leading figures in the British Empire.
