ABSTRACT
Advocates of news journalism have frequently proclaimed its grand educational and political mission. From this perspective, the news media are regarded as ‘the vital arteries through which the information which is our democratic lifeblood flows between rulers and ruled’ (Golding, 1994). Far from being merely an entertaining pastime or an empty ritual, news is seen as nothing less than a fundamental guarantee of a healthy democracy.
