ABSTRACT

This chapter presents findings from the UK discussion groups, again focusing on the students’ readings of four news stories. In the first interview, the students watched two items from First Edition. The first focused on the need to encourage young black people to vote in the forthcoming general election, while the second looked at responses to youth crime. In the second interview, the students watched two items from Wise Up, one on the issue of curfews for young people and the other on the National Lottery. At the beginning of the second interview, held one week after the first, the students were also asked to recall what they could from the items screened the previous week.
