ABSTRACT
Bill Reef, the race director of the “Bolder Boulder” event in Colorado found himself at the center of a controversy when he restricted Kenyan entrants to three. Reef’s defense was that Kenyans were not as mediafriendly as their American counterparts and the race sponsors were concerned about the way in which Kenyans were dominating. In 1996, Kenyans took eight of the first ten places; in 1997, they took seven of the first eight. Reef was insuring against a repetition in 1998.
