ABSTRACT

The discussion in the first part of “Human Nature?” of the Mind and World “seesaw” or “oscillation” substantially overlapped with my comments in a Philosophy and Phenomenological Research Book Symposium, where McDowell contributed an expectably unbending response.1 Responses to responses are subject to a law of diminishing returns; but there is more to say and I am grateful to Nicholas Smith for giving me an opportunity to reply. Whether returns have indeed diminished is for readers of this volume to judge.
