ABSTRACT

Gaining a certificate or diploma in counselling or psychotherapy is a mark of training standard, but it may be the standard of the particular school or training institute that has awarded it. A certificate may be nothing more than a simple certificate of attendance from the institution itself, or the award can be external to the institution:

1 A valid counselling training would mean, at this stage, that a counselling course had applied for and achieved accreditation through a recognised body. The course must meet with the accrediting body’s requirements, thus ensuring that training institutions raise and maintain the standard of training acceptable to that body. An example of an accrediting body is BAC.
