ABSTRACT
Village, parish, hundred, borough, and county: these were some of the myriad institutions through which government exercised its authority. For most people, local government was the only government they knew. Responsible to the king and council, yet endowed with considerable autonomy, these institutions played the most important part in maintaining the order early modern society craved.
