ABSTRACT
In 1945 the French Empire still officially contained 103 million people. Although 45 million of these lived in Metropolitan France, it remained the second largest after that of Great Britain. With over 600 million inhabitants, of whom only 50 million lived in the United Kingdom of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the British Empire ruled over one quarter of the world’s surface.
