ABSTRACT

We come next to an examination of the Danube lands, which may generically be labelled ‘Illyricum’. Viewed from the outside, these are the most important territories-which does not mean that the main centres of intellectual culture were located here, but that it was here that the beginning of the end, the catastrophe that befell the Roman Empire, [MH.II, 219] was prepared, and from here that it was carried out.
