ABSTRACT

Certain groups of Russian society have different educational strategies. This chapter discusses the implications for this of the findings of an all-Russian sociological survey "Rich and poor in modern Russia." The poor and the affluent are those who are characterized by a special place in the social structure with its opportunities and life chances. The Gini coefficient dynamic shows the recent stable stratification in Russian society, which differs from that of the former Soviet Union. In addition to family status, factors that affect the educational strategies of adults can be analysed according to economic and social environment before going to school. Together with the objective starting conditions, a respondent's goal-setting, such as assessing existing knowledge and opportunities and accessing appropriate education, is also important. The cultural and leisure choices available are associated with both the traditions and habits of the Russian people and with new commercial opportunities in a burgeoning market.
