ABSTRACT

In this chapter we examine the ten themes in more detail. Our discussion of these themes with different groups in the schools gave people the opportunity to elaborate on what lay behind their choice of words. These discussions led us to identify the ten themes and to derive five indicators for each of these. In other words, there is a total of fifty specific indicators. Although we might describe these fifty as the building blocks and mortar of the school, that is a limited analogy because these features of a school are as much the products as the ingredients. They arise out of beliefs, values and commitment and from the ability of school staff and governors to translate that commitment into everyday practice.
