Social issues continue to be an important part of the Republican education agenda. These social issues are components of the Republican master narrative as detailed by Drew Westin in The Political Brain. Westin identifi es these components of the Republican master narrative that are related to the Republican education agenda:
• Republicans protect traditional American values • Republicans protect traditional religious faith and values • Poverty is the result of poor character and every American has the chance to
be fi nancially successful through hard work • Republicans protect the free market and rely on the “invisible hand” of the
market • Republicans protect individual freedom from regulation by big government.1
