But, as Erikson notes, each stage is a crisis to be met, as a challenge. Many older people now find a new lease of life through creative, planned retirement. They, like many younger people, are finding less formal arrangements than marriage, and introduction agencies and advertising columns are used nowadays without shame. Sexual plurality, the depathologizing of homosexuality, and the acceptance of multiculturalism and feminism are all part of moves towards a freer, more tolerant society which creates gains as well as strains.
