ABSTRACT

Research clearly shows that an extremely high percentage of truants and persistent school absentees emanate from one-parent families. This unit is written to provide teachers, education welfare officers, social workers and other caring professionals with the basic factual information they will need in dealing with truants and other kinds of disaffected pupils from one-parent families within schools. Research also shows a clear link between pupils from one-parent families and alienated behaviour within schools. In fact, many aggressive delinquents and disruptive truants (including young offenders) come from one-parent families. This is why an understanding of life for pupils inside single families is so important.
