ABSTRACT

Truancy, as a term, is perversely often associated with fun. That is, it is considered by some to be more fun to be outside a school, avoiding formal lessons and, in theory, doing what you like, rather than sitting inside a classroom and ‘learning’. This concept is the theme of Webster’s famous painting

of The Truant in the nineteenth century, which depicts two absconders standing elated outside their small school-room, nervously peering in at the activities inside.
