ABSTRACT

Throughout this handbook there are sections that are related to parents, pupils’ home backgrounds, home-school links, social influences and truancy. Information on one-parent families, for example, is provided in unit 8. However, this unit specifically brings together the remainder of some of the latest

thinking on the importance of parental influences and their relationship to truancy. For this reason, this unit is sub-divided into several parts. These are:

• school attendance: information for parents • parents and truancy: background aspects • Government policies on combating truancy • parents and sound foundations • where parents lay the blame for truancy
