ABSTRACT

Some would say that globalisation is inherent to capitalism, that, as Marx argued, the history of capital presumes a world-embracing commerce. This is a theoretical proposition, proven in practice as the world capitalist economy has expanded to embrace much of the social world (at least via the establishment of a state system that regards all territory as potential market space). But the key issue is how, and with what effects, this world-embracing commerce is now instituted.
