ABSTRACT

Having traced the development of Zionism from its formulation to the establishment of the State of Israel, and its fifty years of existence since, it is fruitful to enquire into the antecedents of the programme. The term ‘Zionism’ was used for the first time towards the end of the last century, and has been used with a variety of meanings: Labour Zionism, revisionist Zionism, religious Zionism, cultural Zionism, political Zionism, humanistic Zionism, the Zionism of the right, and the Zionism of the left, the Zionism of the diaspora, and the Zionism of the State of Israel, and so on.
