ABSTRACT
What is now the Gobbi Theatre Company shares direct ancestry with the Unfortunati. The particular group of friends and acquaintances in the English Civil War Society created not one but two companies, the second of these, and by now the longer lived, was the Gobbi. The name comes from that given to deformed or dwarf court fools at the time of the Renaissance.
