ABSTRACT

Figure 1.1). Firstly, there is the transformation dilemma; institutions involved in traditional industries and faced with renewal often find it difficult to cope with the transformation to the new organisational order. Some of the renewal projects we are referring to in this book are obviously making attempts to deal with this institutional shift. Secondly, there are problems associated with the renewal paradox. The ways in which shortterm flexibility of project organisation can be adapted to long-term economic renewal is a theme that will be followed up in this book. This leads us to a theory of neo-industrial organising, which focuses on an idealised division of work between permanent and temporary organisations. A second but considerably less ambitious aim of the book is to provide some critical comments on current developments.
